Story of Hope: I Wasn’t Just a Patient—I Found a Community That Walked With Me

In May of 2024, I received the news I had been dreading: my cancer had returned. It was a moment I never wanted to face again, but life had other plans. As my doctor delivered the news, there was an added twist I never expected—he told me he was retiring. As if the weight of the cancer diagnosis wasn’t heavy enough, I now had to navigate a change in both doctors and hospitals.

That news led me to make a big decision: I would seek treatment at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. But when I called to schedule an appointment, I was told the wait to see an oncologist would be over six weeks. That felt like an eternity. I knew I needed to take action faster than that.

A New Path, A Gentle Whisper

Thankfully, God led me to Believe Big, a nonprofit organization that helps cancer patients by providing resources, referrals, and support. On their website, I found a list of doctor referrals that led me to Dr. Hancock’s office. I called right away and scheduled an appointment for Mistletoe Therapy, hoping it would help jumpstart my healing process while I waited to see an oncologist.

Mistletoe therapy became a critical part of my treatment plan. I stayed on it throughout chemotherapy, and under the guidance of Dr. Hancock’s office, I was able to take the proper dosage while also undergoing traditional treatments. Remarkably, I experienced minimal side effects. The few I did have—like a sensitive mouth and one day of bone pain—were manageable. A good mouthwash helped soothe my mouth, and ibuprofen was enough to ease the bone pain.

One of the most unexpected blessings during that time was how well my body responded to treatment. I gained weight—something I really needed. I found myself walking daily, working every day, and having a much better appetite than I ever imagined. In fact, I had more energy than my husband, which became a running joke in our household!

I am so grateful for Believe Big and all the resources they provided during this journey. Their support has been absolutely invaluable. From the doctor referral that led me to Mistletoe Therapy, to the team that checked in on me regularly, to the prayer meetings and podcasts that kept my spirit lifted—I never felt alone. I eve

n received a thoughtful gift box that brought me so much comfort, and I was blessed to receive individual healing prayer when I needed it most.

Through Believe Big, I was reminded that I wasn’t just a patient—I was part of a community that truly cared. I felt surrounded by love, support, and a network of people cheering me on. Their focus on healing the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—was exactly what I needed.

As I reflect on this experience, my heart is full of gratitude. The journey wasn’t always easy, but it has shown me how powerful hope, support, and faith truly are. I know I’m not alone, and I am deeply thankful for the people who walked with me every step of the way.

This story isn’t just about cancer—it’s about faith, resilience, love, and the incredible strength that comes from community. I’m here today because of that God-given strength. And I’ll continue to carry it with me, grateful for every moment, every step, and every prayer. – Tammy
